This website has been created to mark the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Australia and Indonesia.

It tells the stories of some of the people, events and programs that exemplify our close and enduring friendship.

On 27 December 1949, when Indonesia formally became an independent sovereign nation, Australia was among the first states to extend formal recognition to the new nation - just as it had been among the first to support Indonesia's struggle for independence. 

In the 70 years since, Australia and Indonesia have continued a close bilateral relationship.
