Dr Laode Muhammad Syarif
Dr Laode Muhammad Syarif is an environmental lawyer who is currently serving as a Commissioner of Indonesia's Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) until December 2019. He has worked with the Indonesian Supreme Court as an ethics specialist, has helped design new environmental management and protection laws, and has worked toward reforms to institutions such as the police and the office of the prosecutor.
Dr Syarif has said that one of the most significant achievements of his life was completing his PhD at the University of Sydney.
‘By completing my education, I received many opportunities to expand my horizons greatly, because I was able to build many networks in Australia and Indonesia,’ he said. ‘It also allowed me to be involved in the designing of several laws such as the environmental management and protection laws. I was able to initiate and work towards the reform of law enforcement institutions such as the police, the prosecutors’ office, and most importantly in the Supreme Court. I was also able to become the main instructor of Ethics at the Supreme Court.’
Dr Syarif said ‘I have long worked to assist the KPK, even before I became a Commissioner. And of course teaching, which is my ultimate passion - I’ve been permitted to teach in far-away places such as Vanuatu, China – places I had never imagined I’d visit before I completed my studies.’
