Law Enforcement Cooperation

The Australian Federal Police (AFP) operates in Indonesia through an arrangement between the Government of the Republic of Indonesia and the Government of Australia to prevent and combat transnational crime, and enhance capacity building.

On 12 August 2019, the Chief of the Indonesian National Police (INP) hosted the AFP Commissioner in Jakarta, during which the Arrangement between the Indonesian National Police and Australian Federal Police on Cooperation in Preventing and Combating Transnational Crime was renewed.

The AFP’s Jakarta Post was established in 1979 with one member. the AFP’s Bali Post opened in 2004.

AFP Indonesia now represents the largest contingent of AFP members at any of its international posts. The INP and AFP cooperate on many crime types including counter terrorism, people smuggling and human trafficking, transnational child sexual exploitation, organised crime, anti-corruption, cybercrime, forensics and capacity building.

In 2003, the INP stationed its first liaison officer in Canberra.
