Australia’s first Consul-General to Indonesia was formally appointed in 1946, and the Consulate-General in Jakarta was upgraded to the status of an embassy in 1950, with HE Mr John Hood appointed as Ambassador.
The first purpose built chancery was opened in Menteng, in Jalan MH Thamrin, in 1967, where the mission remained for 26 years, until it was relocated to Jalan HR Rasuna Said, Kuningan, in 1993.
The current embassy building was officially opened on 21 March 2016, by then Foreign Minister the Hon Julie Bishop MP. The embassy complex covers more than 50,000 square metres and is the largest ever constructed by the Australian Government - reflecting the importance of the relationship in Indonesia.
Australia also opened Consulates-General in Bali (1981), Makassar (2016), and Surabaya (2017), reflecting the depth of the relationship between Australia and Indonesia.
