Professor Hadi Soesastro was an Indonesian economist and intellectual with close research and policy links to Australia. He was regarded as one of Indonesia’s foremost economists.

Professor Soesastro was one of the founders of the Centre for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) in 1971, serving as its Executive Director for ten years. CSIS undertakes research on domestic and international economic, political and social issues.

Professor Soesastro was a long-time member of the Indonesia Project at the Australian National University (ANU). In 2009 he was awarded an honorary doctorate by the ANU for his outstanding contributions to thinking and policy in the fields of international economics, economic reform in Indonesia and international economic relations, particularly with Australia and the East Asian region.

The annual Australia Awards Hadi Soesastro Prize supports Indonesian academics who are completing their doctorates in Australia. It aims to develop young leaders and promote educational links between Australia and Indonesia.
