Elizabeth O'Neill OAM
Elizabeth O'Neill OAM was an Australian public servant and diplomat who worked tirelessly to foster mutual understanding between Australia and Indonesia through accurate and informed media coverage.
Elizabeth O'Neill was awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia in October 2003 for her role in the Department of Foreign Affairs’ Emergency Response Team deployed following the Bali bombings in 2002.
Elizabeth O'Neill was later posted to the Australian Embassy Jakarta but died tragically on 7 March 2007 when her flight crashed near Yogyakarta.
The Elizabeth O’Neill Journalism Award was also established in her honour and is presented to one journalist from Australia and Indonesia each year.
