The Hon Julie Bishop MP, Minister for Foreign Affairs, opened the new Australian Consulate-General in Makassar on 22 March 2016. The Minister delivered a keynote speech on Australia-Indonesia relations to senior government, business and community contacts, highlighting the opportunities for Australia to enhance trade and investment and build stronger economic partnerships and people-to-people links with Eastern Indonesia.

The opening of a Consulate-General in Makassar recognised the exciting prospects that the city and the region holds for the Australia-Indonesia relationship. Makassar is the closest major Indonesian city to Australia. It is an important commercial hub and thriving city, and is growing at an exciting pace.
