Australian Consulate-General Surabaya
The Hon Julie Bishop MP, then Minister for Foreign Affairs, opened the Australian Consulate-General in Surabaya on 5 August 2018. The Minister delivered a keynote speech on Australia-Indonesia relations to 200 senior government, business and community contacts, highlighting the opportunities for Australia to enhance trade and investment and build stronger economic partnerships and people-to-people links with East Java and Central Java.
Ms Bishop also met with the East Java Governor-elect Khofifah Indar Parawansa and Vice Governor-elect Emil Dardak. It was a great opportunity to meet with the incoming leadership team of the province with a population of 40 million people. Parawansa and Australian alumnus Dardak told Ms Bishop that they are keen to work with Australia on social and economic reform.
Minister Bishop later visited a senior secondary school in Surabaya to mark the 10 year anniversary of the Australia-Indonesia BRIDGE School Partnerships program with students and teachers, and included an exhibition of broader Australian support to education in Indonesia.
